In Scotland's commuter belt, Uddingston is only ten miles outside of Glasgow and not too far from Edinburgh. It boasts excellent transport links and all the amenities you'd need, but still manages to be a rural escape.

So, for people new to the area, it's important to point out that some places north of the motorway also count as Uddingston, mainly housing developments. This includes Calderbraes, Tannochside and Viewpark. Combined with these districts, Uddingston has around 25,000 residents.

The town has plenty of family businesses and your high-street regulars, but Scotland's major cities are never far away. It only takes 15 minutes by train to get to into Glasgow city centre, and Edinburgh is roughly an hour's drive away.

But there's so much more to the town than an easy commute. The locals are friendly and there's a real sense of community. Plus, you can still get a lot of house for your money.

Where should you look for a house in Uddingston?

Without a doubt, location is a huge factor when buying a house. And Uddingston has a lot of variety. In the centre, there are fantastic red stone villas - but they can be hard to come by.

Kylepark is equally popular, with more of a mix of property. Whether you're looking for traditional or modern, it's a great place to start your search, with all the things that make Uddingston great - particularly good local schools.

Throughout the area, there are a few impressive developments. The quality and attention to detail is superb, including great landscaping. It's no surprise many of the housebuilders are award-winning. Try around Bellshill Road for contemporary estates - some newer than others.

There's also the key residential hubs the other side of the M74, where you tend to find prices are a bit lower. You've still got convenient transport links, and every shop or amenity you'd need on your doorstop. Popular areas around here include Tannochside, Viewpark and Calderbraes.

Tannochside has some lovely detached houses, predominantly brick-built in the 1990s, although there has been a bit of building work going on recently too. Much of the Viewpark area was built earlier than Tannochside, so quite a lot of houses are from the 1960s, with all the features you'd expect of the period.

Last but not least, there's also Calderbraes. With loads of bungalows and spacious homes along hillside avenues, it's a great place for anyone to start their search for new space. All of these places are ideally located for access to the motorway and beyond.
