Overview
Looking for a house in Glasgow? Scotland's largest city is popular with locals, as well as people from far and wide. Drawn by career opportunities and a great quality of life, Glasgow is a city known for its buzz. The creative, cultural, sports and entertainment scenes are packed full of choice.
There's a great balance in Glasgow. As a shopping and nightlife destination, it's probably the best outside of London. But there are plenty of green spaces where you can relax and enjoy the fresh air - in fact, there's more green space per square mile than any other UK city. Often referred to as the gateway to Scotland, even more amazing countryside is never far away.
Living in Glasgow
Every year, the list of accolades for Glasgow gets more impressive. It's been named the friendliest city in the world, the UK's coolest city, and much more. Sitting on the banks of the River Clyde, Glasgow's energy is infectious.
Plus, it's an easy city to live in. Public transport runs regularly and smoothly, with a trip around all 15 stations in the subway system - The Clockwork Orange - taking less than half an hour. Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh, is around an hour away by train, and travel connections to the rest of the UK are good, including the M74 down south.
Where should you look for a house in Glasgow?
Housing in Glasgow is as varied as the scenery. Victorian suburbs, waterfront developments, traditional tenements, and more - home to almost 600,000 people, the city offers something for everyone. But where should you look?
The Southside is pleasant, yet still has an urban feel. Shawlands is the heart of the area, so look around Kilmarnock Road if you want to be nearer the bars and restaurants. The streets nearer Newlands Park are more popular with families looking for a leafier corner of Glasgow. Other key areas around here include: Pollokshields, Govanhill and Mount Florida.
From the Southside, trains into Glasgow Central are regular and quick. From both Shawlands and Mount Florida, it only takes around 11 minutes.
If you're willing to have a longer commute, you'll find some great houses in Giffnock and Newton Mearns. Both south of the River Clyde, they're a bit further out than the Southside. If you'd rather be north of the river, try Bearsden and Milngavie, both popular with commuters. All these places offer a great balance of open spaces and short journeys to work.
If you'd rather be in the city centre, the West End has still got a village vibe, and you're never more than 10 minutes from the centre by public transport or around a 30-minute short walk. Try places like Dowanhill, Partick and Kelvingrove.
In the east of Glasgow, you'll find a lot of modern developments thanks to the major regeneration in the run-up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Improved facilities have attracted a lot of home owners to the area, particularly around Dalmarnock.
We couldn't forget the Hyndland area of Glasgow either, as it's the only tenement conservation area in the UK. You'll find houses with huge rooms and high ceilings, packed full of period features.
